Activities
Meetings
Devon Humanists meet informally at the Phoenix Centre, Exeter, on the third Thursday each month from 12:30 for food, drinks, chat or discussion and to meet other members and friends. A discussion group meets monthly during the winter. In summer, walks and visits to places of interest take place. Dates for the discussion group and other events are advertised in Humanist Forum and on our
events page.
British Humanist Association
Activities such as Humanist Holidays, Humanist Family Network and other events are arranged nationally by the
British Humanist Association. And for those who want to delve deeper, there are conferences and seminars. Details of all these events are given in
Humanist Forum.
Ceremonies
As Humanists we recognise the importance of ceremonies as landmarks in our lives. We know, too, that as people face times of transition, it is vital that the ceremony they choose reflects their values and beliefs accurately in order to avoid hypocrisy. The BHA therefore has a network of highly trained celebrants who can work with you to create a meaningful and moving - but non-religious - naming, wedding, affirmation or funeral (or any other ceremony) that is appropriate to your needs and wishes. To know more, please email the Devon co-ordinator
celebrants@devonhumanists.org.uk, write to the contact address in Humanist Forum, or look at the websites
Humanist Ceremonies in the South West or, for a national list searchable by post code,
British Humanist Association.
Aquaboxes
In January 2001, Devon Humanists made filling Aquaboxes an on-going project. Nationally organised by Winkworth Rotary since 1992 and backed by Rotary International,
the scheme involves many different groups across the country filling large, purpose-made, sturdy plastic boxes with essential items for disaster areas. Devon Humanists have so far filled 136 boxes (by summer 2007). After unpacking, the box with its water purifying kit provides a supply of safe drinking water. Information about filling boxes and what is needed can be obtained by emailing
forum@devonhumanists.org.uk. We collect old tools to be refurbished by
Tools for Self Reliance before being sent on to countries where they can be used.
